Mohonk Mountain House stands at the heart of a magnificent 26,000-acre natural area in
the Shawangunk Mountains which is comprised of the Mohonk resort property, private
preserves, and a state park preserve. Tucked away near the top of the Shawangunk Ridge
is Lake Mohonk, a half-mile long, 60-foot-deep, freshwater lake where a sprawling

castle stands guard. This is one of the last great 19th-century mountain
resorts. A full resort facility, Mohonk has 265 guest rooms, five guest cottages,
three spacious dining rooms, 138 working fireplaces, 238 balconies, and a half-dozen
parlors. The grounds feature gardens, a greenhouse, 125 scenic summerhouses (gazebos),
picnic areas, a museum, stables sports facilities, and an observation point known as
Sky Top Tower. Once strictly a summer resort, Mohonk now accommodates vacationers and
conferences year-round.
One sees Lake Mohonk today much as Albert Smiley saw it in 1869
when he made the original purchase of 280 acres and a ten-room inn. Over a century later,
in 1986, Mohonk Mountain House was named a National Historic Landmark. This designation
was unique in that it encompassed not only the Mountain House but 83 other Mohonk
buildings of historic significance and the surrounding 7,800 acres of developed and
undeveloped land. The resort has been a member of Historic Hotels of America since
1991. In 1994, Mohonk received an award from the United Nations Environment Programme
recognizing 125 years of environmental stewardship.
Environmental stewardship through earth-friendly activities and design features, an
extensive energy saving program, and green initiatives that preserve the land and
educate people have long been a central component of the commitment that Mohonk
Mountain House has to its guests and to the environment. This steadfast approach to
environmental stewardship by the Smiley family will continue to grow and evolve for many more years to come.
In 1980 Mohonk Consultations, a not-for-profit was founded to raise individuals' awareness
and understanding of local and global ecological systems by sponsoring conferences at
Mohonk Mountain House. Visit www.mohonk-consultations.org for more information.
Now in the fourth generation of family leadership, Mohonk Mountain House has managed
to maintain its 19th century charm while introducing amenities of the 21st century.
Dedicated to providing “recreation and renewal of body, mind, and spirit in a
beautiful natural setting,” The Spa at Mohonk Mountain House is the ideal complement
to existing facilities as this remarkable resort continues to remain “the same, only
better.”
